Event Description:
NOTE: Please feel free to bring a snack or brown bag lunch to make the most of this session. With the pending legalization of cannabis expected this summer, workplaces are taking steps to ensure that they are putting appropriate measures in place to ready themselves when legalization hits. This session will discuss the current state of the law and the proposed legal changes, and how the issue of legalization of recreational use will differ from medically prescribed use, and provide practical tips on how to address the safety concerns posed by drug use in the workplace. Attendees will learn the following: 1. Laws surrounding legal cannabis use (current and pending) 2. Various safety and human rights issues imposed by those using and/or impaired by cannabis and other drugs in the workplace 3. Practical tips to manage the risks posed by use/impairment of cannabis in the workplace in a legal way Jamie Jurczak is a Partner with the law firm Taylor McCaffrey LLP, where she practices as a member of their labour and employment law and civil litigation practice groups. Experienced in all facets of management-side labour and employment law, including human rights, wrongful dismissals, grievance and interest arbitration, her practice has a special focus on occupational health and safety (OHS) matters. She is recognized as a leading practitioner in OHS and Workplace Human Rights by the Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory.
